I finally had the chance to see Eve Sussman’s 2010 film, 89 Seconds at Alcazar at the National Museum of Women in the Arts while I was in DC last week. Sussman’s compelling recreation of the Velazquez painting, Las Meninas was mesmerizing. The film depicts a seemingly one take view of the moments before all of the characters in the painting settle into place. I had to watch the film a few times before I was able to continue through the museum. This was one one of those unexpected sublime museum moments.
